My wife, who is a physical therapist, loaned me the text book she had saved from her college days on clinical neuroanatomy. Immediately I realized I was in over my head. I tried another book that promised to make the subject ridiculously simple, but even then my comprehension improved by less than one percent.
Besides the helpful illustrations and tables, the text is very accessible and the important terms of structures and processes are generally defined nearby. Although I still need my wife's help to explain a few things to me, I really feel like I am learning something about the human nervous system.
I do not have an education or background in the medical field, but developed a deep interest in neuroscience. At first it was enough to read works by popular authors (e.g., Damasio, Edleman, Le Doux, etc.), but then I felt it necessary to go deeper. I am very grateful for those who have produced and published this text.

5 Stars but you need some experience to cook

Pellegrino Artusi died in 1911 at the age of 91. He was the most famous cookbook author in Italy. His most important book is The Art of Eating Well. As his book both promoted and gained in popularity from the spread of standard Italian (he lived in Florence, birthplace of standard Italian) it persists into today. Maria Gentile was creating an English version that was published eight years later.

The current English version of Artusi's master work begins with broth:

BRODO:
As everyone knows, to obtain a good broth, you begin by placing the meat in cold water and you keep the pot at the barest simmer...

Maria Gentile likewise begins:

BROTH OR SOUP STOCK

Now you may think that I am saying she took his book to America in the great immigration following World War I, which she naturally calls The Great War, and takes credit for it in English. Artusi is not mentioned anywhere. But I do not see any point in trying to make any such argument.

First of all, this all happened a whole other Artusi life span ago. Secondly, and more importantly, as much as there are close replications of his entries, she rewrites them freely. For example, Artusi mentions that onions are not suitable for everybody because onion is windy. Gentile would not be so indelicate, and simply drops them altogether. Where Artusi complains that modern doctors have overturned the traditional wisdom that broth is nutritious, he simply admits to not having the competence to prove the doctors' error. But Gentile goes on to make a point that she has a variation that is to be used for invalids. For myself, I am happy to have both of them out together and let the to old cooks have their conversation for my benefit.

Amazon sells Artusi's book of the same title but they removed the link from this review so you will have to look it up on your own,, should you be curious.

But I warn you. If you take to her strongly, you will want her great predecessor. The other nice thing about Pellegrino is that he has much less of an aversion to giving each ingredient's measure. Secondly, he comes with an expert editor and translator in the person of Kyle Phillips III. Finally, he is such an Italian. He has lots of extra pages where he holds forth on this and that. Maria is a much more focused, quiet new American.

Which is to say that if you intend to make kitchen use of this book, you must have enough feel for cooking that you can figure your own proportions. These all work fine, but a beginner might feel lost in the suga, so to speak. If that is you, get her anyway and just read for a while. This is an important historical work of proven culinary practice in a great cuisine. The five stars are for what this book has and its place in history and the culinary tradition.

A book for cooks

If you have ever wanted a true Italian cookbook for a great price, pick this one up! It was published in 1919, and assumes that everyone has a good working knowledge of the kitchen and hours to spare. This is a book for very experienced cooks, because you won't find anything as mundane as cup and spoon measurements. This is cooking by the seat of your pants with general guidelines to go by, which is how a lot of good cooks really cook anyway (at least I do - hmmm, what ingredients do I have and what flavor do I want...what's on sale...). Some of the ingredients will be hard to find or might make you cringe, but this was written in the days before dietitians and when every scrap was used. So enjoy this book from a traditional/historical point of view and maybe even jump into the adventurous side of cooking! I know I can't wait to try some of these recipes, even if I do substitute out some things like the lard.

This book is better used for reference on the history of Italian home cooking than used as a recipe guide. The quantities and instructions are vague, but there is a wealth of ideas for creative cooks and food history fans--particularly on the uses of organ meats.

I bought this book for a great friend of mine who grew up in Alabama.He and his wife love this book,not only does it have restaurants they have loved in the past but also the recipes from those places they can make at home.They said it made them a bit less homesick for what they left behind.

Sadly the end of the series.

Leviathan, Behemoth and Goliath are wonderful gems. Couldn't put them down and after I read Leviathan, I had to track down the other two books. An awesome blend of alternate history, not necessarily steampunk, but engine driven machinations, genetically engineered animals, a little gender bending and true love. What more could you ask for?

An outstanding finale

After narrowly escaping the Tesla canon in Istanbul, the Leviathan heads east with Deryn and Alek in tow, where they are expected to pick up a mysterious new passenger. The newcomer is secretive and quirky to the extreme: his eccentricities put Deryn on edge, but his claims of having a device that will end the war intrigue Alek. As secrets are revealed and the Leviathan continues east to the United States, dodging enemies along the way, Deryn will make some important choices about her future and the decisions Alek must make will affect the entire world.

Goliath is an outstanding finale to this imaginative and vivid steampunk trilogy. Once again, Westerfeld masterfully balances the intrigue and politics of the great war between the Darwinists and Clankers with Alek and Deryn's dynamic and unique friendship. The tensions between the two run high as Alek finally discovers the truth about Deryn, and there is plenty of drama as they try to figure where they stand with each other. Alek also experiences many personal conflicts as he puts his trust in a weapon in order to bring an end to the war, and is ultimately tested to his limits. A few old characters resurface as complications arise and provide some well-needed insight and comic relief to the story. Everything in Goliath builds to an electrifying confrontation with a breathless and very satisfactory ending. This final book is full of adventure, plenty of skulking about, moral dilemmas, and no shortage of action. It will be very hard to let go of Alek, Deryn, the perspicacious loris, and the rest of Westerfeld's magnificent world.

The nations of the Triple Entente (Britain, France, and Russia) are Darwinists, breeding "fabricated" creatures of combined DNA. I was hooked on the idea of Leviathan before it came out, and delighted that it and its sequel, Behemoth, came through on their promises of humor, adventure, and unique alternate history.

The series centers on the intertwining stories of Deryn Sharp and Prince Aleksandar of Hohenburg. Alek is the son of the Archduke, on the run from his father's enemies. Deryn is a Scottish girl who disguises herself as a boy in order to serve on the British airship Leviathan, made from the pooled DNA of a hundred species. Goliath takes them on a cross-the-globe journey that features more real historical figures than we've met elsewhere in the series. Especially prominent is egotistical and madcap inventor, Nikola Tesla, whose genius and insanity create the central conflict.

Goliath could coast on the power of its sheer awesomeness: its inventive technologies, fast-paced adventuring, and daring acts of bravery. But it is the charming and immensely likable characters that make the book really special (which is not to say that the man-made monsters, secret nighttime escapades, and non-metaphorical cliff-diving don't make it all the more interesting).

The protagonists share the narration, making for some great moments of dramatic irony. Deryn is, as her name suggests, a very sharp thinker and exemplary midshipman. Alek, whom she repeatedly calls "daft prince," is often less perceptive but makes up for his occasional unawareness with passion for what, and who, he loves. They are equal heroes, each getting their share of triumphs and blunders.

The artwork, by Keith Thompson, is downright spectacular. The fifty-plus illustrations range in size from a fraction of a page to two-page spreads. The character portraits are delightful in their expressiveness and the scenic shots are gorgeous.

Goliath does all the things a final installment ought to. Characters from the previous books make their appropriate final appearances, deceptions are cleared, and all loose ends are tied up. The ending is worthy of fist-pumping and a happy dance, although I felt that there was slightly more than enough mystery left over. For those saddened by the reality that there will be no more Leviathan novels, The Manual of Aeronautics, a full-color, large-format guide to the series' world, is set to be released next August.

Fans will not be disappointed: Goliath is a satisfying end to a brilliant series.

Powerful, moving glimpses into the immigrant experience...

Arturo and Alma Rivera lived a happy life in Mexico until their beautiful teenage daughter, Maribel, sustains a serious injury in an accident. Unsure if she'll ever be the same again, they migrate to the United States—Delaware, specifically—where Maribel will be able to attend a special school and hopefully begin to recover some semblance of normalcy. But America is difficult for the Riveras—the job Arturo secures to sponsor their journey to America is brutal, Maribel doesn't seem to be making much progress in school, and Alma struggles with English, and trying to become acclimated to a different life.

"Because a place can do many things against you, and if it's your home or if it was your home at one time, you still love it. That's how it works."

The one bright spot is that the Riveras meet Celia and Rafael Toro, who came to the U.S. years ago to escape the destruction and violence in Panama. The Toros are more settled into their American lives, although Celia in particular longs to return home, at least for a visit. And when their teenage son, Mayor, who struggles with self-confidence in the shadow of his more athletic, popular older brother, sets eyes on Maribel for the first time, he finds himself completely in her thrall, and wants nothing more to spend time with her, despite what others perceive as her challenges.

As the relationship between the Riveras and the Toros grows stronger, it is tested—as are relationships within each family—by secrets, incorrect assumptions, fears, longing, and struggles. And a number of incidents occur which set in motion a chain of events which will affect each member of both families in vastly different ways.

Cristina Henriquez's The Book of Unknown Americans gives a powerful and moving glimpse into the immigrant experience for many Latin American people. In addition to telling the story of the Rivera and Toro families, the plot is interwoven with brief testimonials from other neighbors, each of whom came from a different Latin American country and experienced different struggles and happinesses upon arriving in America. This is a book that makes you think a little bit more about the challenges and barriers people often deal with when coming to America, even legally.

I thought this was a very captivating read, and Henriquez is an excellent storyteller. While some of her characters may seem familiar, I thought she imbued them with interesting characteristics and quirks that made them more complex. I read this book very quickly, and found it an emotionally rich story I'm still thinking about.

This book was good, but I do agree with another reviewer who ...

I choose this book because it seemingly told the story of an immigrant group that seems to be vilified and misunderstood. I wanted to understand and learn about their experience. This book was good, but I do agree with another reviewer who said it should be classified as Young Adult reading. I read this in a few hours. The writing was very simple. There were a few memorable & poetic lines, but not many. The story is told by the point of view of numerous characters. I enjoyed that aspect. The main characters were immigrants from various Central & South American countries, detailing their struggles to assimilate in a smaller city in Delaware. All of the characters lived in a rundown apartment building, and for the most part were close knit and supportive of each other. There was one main story that followed the lives of a Mexican couple and their beautiful daughter, Maribel, who legally immigrated. Maribel suffered a traumatic brain injury in Mexico, and the US was the place where the best schools were, so the family ventured to start a new life in Delaware with ultimately devastating and life altering results. I don't like to give spoilers, but this book is absorbing and a quick, fast read.

Maribel's life has been cut short of the promise of her childhood. In traveling to Delaware, her parents are determined to restore all of the promise robbed by an accident one sunny day. They are not the usual people of the American dream, they had loved their life in Mexico. Just so their friends had left Panama under threat, but miss its smells and rhythms.
I love the story of Mayor who sees the person the Mirabel remains and treasures her for her quiet attention to him and his world. Their relationship sets a type of frame for the lives of the families as they attempt to be the best of unknown Americans.

This is a novel of unlovely places made dear by the attention and intent of those who live within them. I find it quiet in scope, but not slow and not picky. Shining moments are let to shine without fanfare or hyperbole. I just really liked the style of this prose. Many moments break your heart, but they are of a piece with life. I find the book a lovely and important look at a corner of the world.
