Somewhat disappointed
By cosmology
I got this to make up for a printed manual, to improve my skills, and to have a reference book. So far, I'm fairly disappointed. It seems to be better than what can be had for free, but not by much. Used as a reference, I went looking for "undirected angle", hoping for a brief explanation of what is does. Nope. I get instruction in the form of 20 steps to teach myself using a tutorial file. I appreciate the approach, and it seems to be used heavily in this book, but most of the time, I just need a brief explanation or a refresher on what a command does. This method falls short. Another example: I want to scale a solid. I look in the index for "scale" which takes me to free forms.. nope. I search google and find out in 2016 you can scale using "direct edit". There are also ways to scale parts by deriving them, but I didn't learn that in this book. So, I find the "direct edit" in the index and when I go look, sure enough, you can scale, but the section on this tool fails to mention where the heck I find it. I hope this book redeems itself over the next months, but it's off to a rocky start.

TENSE
By Molly Gambiza
I read book one ‘Living with Killers’ and quite enjoyed it. I had to know what happened to Rachel, Blake and that slippery Greg. Greg is one character I wouldn’t want to meet but he makes this story very interesting, its so tense and hard to know what’s going to happen next. It’s had to trust anyone including the police or your own father. But will Blake find Rachel? The poor girl tangled with killers, Rebels and Liars. Adam Nicholls is a talented crime writer.
I thoroughly enjoyed Running with Rebels, I am now moving on to part three ‘Living with Liars’ I have to know what happens next…..

I loved this book. This book had action, drama and mystery. I am going to read the other books in this series. This book would make a great action movie. This book reminded me of James Patterson's Alex Cross series. I like this type of book/story genre.

“A classic. Its scope is astonishing, and it contains much wisdom and profound philosophy.” —Sir Arthur C. ClarkeA father and son go searching for the stars, but much more than gravity will hold them back
Born the year of the Moon landing, Chris Terence spends his life fighting to return humanity to that pinnacle. An engineering student with dreams of spaceflight, he finds upon graduation that the United States no longer has need for astronauts. Years of bureaucratic meddling have reduced the space program to a shell of itself, and it will take the greatest scientific find in history to send humanity skyward once more. After years battling budget hawks, Chris finally gets his chance to walk on the Moon. While there, he finds evidence of an ancient alien civilization, the Tiberians, who visited Earth’s satellite eight thousand years before. Understanding what happened to those long-forgotten travelers will define the lives of Chris and his son, as they fight against all odds to unlock the secrets of the universe.

Amazon.com Review
Buzz Aldrin, one of manned space flight's pioneers, has helped create a stunning, possibly prophetic novel of the future of space exploration. A radio beacon from an unknown world leads an astronaut to disaster on the Moon -- and his son far beyond that as he searches for the key to the mystery of Tiber, a civilization who left artifacts in the solar system some 9,000 years ago, with sufficient impact on human affairs to explain some odd references in the Bible. The villains of the book are not the aliens, but the benighted politicians with the minds of accountants who won't fund the necessary scientific derring-do to save the world -- apparently an affliction which alien astronauts also have to bear.

You can read an exclusive interview with Buzz Aldrin written by Frank Braun.

From Publishers Weekly
Astronaut Aldrin (Men from Earth, 1989), who was the second man to walk on the moon, and the Hugo- and Nebula-nominated Barnes (Mother of Storms, etc.) join forces in this enjoyable saga which combines two classic SF themes: the future of spaceflight and contact with intelligent alien life. The story oscillates between the careers of two human astronauts, Chris Terence and his son, Jason, on the moon and Mars, and the efforts of the Tiberians (from a planet of Alpha Centauri) to colonize Earth during prehistoric times. Chris meets his destiny while trying to retrieve a Tiberian relic from the moon. Meanwhile, the Tiberians' desperate efforts to colonize a habitable planet before their own is destroyed runs up against a host of well-depicted obstacles. Folly, prejudice, petty rivalries and bureaucratic befuddlement are shown to be common to both races, which are depicted with wit and empathy. Multiple subplots, a huge cast that deserves a glossary but doesn't get one and too many expository lumps impede narrative flow. Even so, the authors' lively storytelling will engage readers as it conveys the wonder and promise of space. Author tour.

From Library Journal
Former astronaut Aldrin and Hugo and Nebula award nominee Barnes team up to produce a lavishly detailed story of the flight of the Nisuans from their doomed planet. They arrive on 73rd century B.C. Earth only to be enslaved by humans. Interspersed is the story of 21st-century humans who receive a radio signal from the Nisuans. They accelerate the space program to find them and the encyclopedia they've sent to the moon and Mars. The complex story is rich in technical and scientific detail that can come only from one so intimately acquainted with real space flight. The illustrations were not seen. Highly recommended.

One of the Best I've ever read
By John R. Krawczyk II
In my long and often fruitless search for decent sci-fi once in a while a gem is found. This is one of those cases. Also this book written in '96 predicted a 2nd shuttle accident which of course happened in Feb. 2003. The current science is very well researched and yet also leads us to see how future things may develop. The characters and the plot are very believable: characters and events are subject to wise decisions but also the flaws that exist in even the best people and governments have their part to play.

Not since the original writings of Asimov have I seen such decent and well planed out sci-fi writing.

Note to the 1st reviewer: B. Aldrin has a doctorate in astronautics from MIT. How can he be "in over his head" in writing a sci-fi book???

Thick novel of ideas...
By Peter LaPrade
Buzz Aldrin and John Barnes wrote the long, but quite thought-provoking science fiction story "Encounter with Tiber". At almost 600 pages, it takes a reader at least a couple of days to trudge through the story, especially the early highly technical parts of the story. Aldrin essentially predicted commerical space travel, and from the news, we may not be far off from the scenerio that Aldrin and Barnes present here. The story is told through five different narrators with three humans at various points in the 2lst Century, and two "Tiberians" who came to Earth(or as they called it Setepos) in ancient times. Basically, the message is that science and space exploration takes time and commitment, but it's worth pursuing. The novel leaves the reader wanting more, as Clio(an astronaut traveling in the late 21st Century) discovers that her journey is just beginning. It leaves room for a sequel, which depending on your attitude towards the story is good or bad. I enjoyed this rich novel, and recommend this for anyone who really wants to know why we should try to go to Mars.

From Earth to the Moon then far beyond ...
By Marilyn Armstrong
Originally published in July 1996, Encounter With Tiber was released on Kindle on May 28, 2013. I'm a lifelong fan of science fiction and a lifelong fan of space exploration. I watched the moon landing in 1969 -- the glory days of NASA -- and dreamed I'd live to see space flight become accessible to everyone, even me. I was doubtful that I would ever see space, but if someone offered me a lift, I'd have taken it in a heartbeat.

I jumped into reading this with enthusiasm. Buzz Aldrin's fingerprints are all over the first section of the book. Not only does it give you an up-close and highly personal look at the inner workings of NASA, but it gives you an uncomfortably intimate view of the politics of America's space program.

From this, I gleaned an enormous amount of information about what happened to the U.S. space program and how come, more than 40 years after landing men on the moon, our space program is moribund, mired in budgetary insufficiency, the dreams of venturing into space dead on the launch pad. The 16 years since the publication of the book have dealt unkindly with NASA and it's hard to see what it would take to revive the program.

This first part of the book is a beautiful presentation of our space technology, why it worked, why it stopped working. For the first time, I understand the workings -- and failures -- of our technology. He uses diagrams. Real diagrams to explain all kinds of stuff I had heard about and never understood. I know it is supposed to be fiction, but it certainly felt very real. Then the book switches authors. Rarely in a co-authored book has it been so obvious when one author stops writing and the other picks up. The style goes from scientific and precise, to ... something else. Aldrin writes like the scientist he is. Barnes writes like a novelist for whom detail is an aggravation.

The change in "voice" is abrupt and a bit jarring. Both authors write well but entirely differently.

In a way, the things about the book that are good ... and the things that aren't so good ... are the same thing. This is very ambitious book and very long. It covers the real development and fizzling of our space program, then takes off into the stars with a crew composed of different races leaving from other planets in a another star system. The stories tie together eventually.

I was bothered by the sudden change from Aldrin's precision to Barnes lack there of. Aldrin explains everything as he talks about it, so you don't spend a lot of time saying "huh?" Barnes doesn't even bother to define terms like "day" and "week" when jumping into a star system and planet whose rotation and orbit is entirely different from Earth so that the terms "waiting half a day" is completely meaningless and lacking. Vague, belated attempts to rectify the initial omission were more annoying than satisfying. Eventually, I just rearranged my brain and enjoyed the journey. The characters -- human and otherwise -- are interesting and well-drawn, though the aliens weren't sufficiently alien for me to feel their alienness. They seemed more like Wookies -- humans in furry costumes -- than true alien beings.

It's worth the read, though you'll need to be patient as you travel. Encounter With Tiber is a long, complicated book, multi-faceted and thought-provoking. It's a bit worrying because the real failure of our space program will, if you accept the book's premise, ultimately doom us to extinction. Not tomorrow, but eventually. A basic tenet of the book is ultimately all planets break down. Worlds get old. Life moves on or dies. If a species has no way to escape its dying planet, it will die with the planet. It's enough to give one pause. If you never thought about it before, Encounter With Tiber will get you thinking in new direction. And perhaps worrying in new directions.

Think of this as two separate book fused together, related, but not the same. It will make more sense and be easier to read. Essentially, that's what it is. Two books. Two authors. Related, but not the same. Everything you never wanted to know about NASA and then a trip through the stars in an alien ship looking for a new planet to call home.
