Great book

I really enjoyed reading the Cowboy's Designer Baby. The premise was very interesting. First what would Brady do to have a child and then how would things work for him and the lady he selected.
Second how would Jasmine deal with her schooling and her plans for the future and how having a baby would impact them.
The book is a great quick read and left me wanting to know more about what happens to the characters in the future. Alexis Gold has written another wonderful story and fans of romance will not be disappointed if they purchase the book.

What a beautiful story of a rich

What a beautiful story of a rich, single man who wanted to leave his legacy to a child of his own without being married. All of the thought process and actual planning materialized into a surogate of his choosing . Se became pregnant, moved into his home after she fall and was injured and they eventually fell in love and so the story goes and they marry and live happily ever after. Well written. I read the story in one sitting.

This was a very enjoyable story. Brady and Jasmine were meant to be.together. They had the same goals in life and both worked hard to achieve it. Brady was shy and had a hard time talking to women. He felt that he would never find true love. He decided he wanted to have an heir and that was when he meet Jasmine. She needed money for student loans and thought being a surrogate was the right answer. This is a great read.

Superb

The authors took 6 years to write this book. And it shows. This is a mindblowing tour through the algorithms used at the cutting edge of Robotics.

What is good

1. Every algorithm has descriptive text, mathematical derivations AND pseudo code. More importantly it all meshes into a cohesive whole.

2. The progression of chapters is excellent, starting with basic algorithms and proceeding to more advanced/refined algorithms.

3.There is a consistent practical focus with algorithms being explained in the context of solving real world problems in robotics.

4. The exercises are few in number , but are *perfect* to illuminate each chapter's ideas and encourage the reader to start thinking on his own.

5. There is a comprehensive errata page on the book's website.

6. Last but not least, the tone of the writing is very engaging. The reader is not talked down to. It is almost as if the authors were in your study carefully guiding you through an intellectual wonderland.

The bad.

Hmmm i can't think of anything. It is great book. I just wish the authors would write MORE books like this :-)

About the only caveat is that a reader should have *some* degree of mathematical insight before attempting this book. The authors do cover elementary probability theory etc in the initial chapters, and they do a good job given the space constraints. But in my opinion if you have absolutely no experience in probability theory or calculus, you should probably learn from other books and then tackle this one. This is, after all, a graduate level text.

Delivers even more than it promises

This is really an amazing book - it more than fulfilled my expectations.
It starts from the very basics of probability theory and clearly derives
Kalman Filtering, Particle Filtering, Probabilistic Motion and Probabilistic
Perception in the first 6 chapters. From there it moves on to talk about
Localization and Mapping completely separately (which I appreciated, since
the two topics are far easier to comprehend independently) in chapters 7 and
8 and then finally introduces SLAM (the main topic of the book) in chapter
9. From there it goes on to discuss various SLAM algorithms and implementations,
and finally rounds out with planning and control (that is, the practical
application of SLAM algorithms).

I can't imagine a more well-researched academic work. Every point is backed
up with examples and illustrations, and every algorithm is derived rigorously.
Even better, the mathematical derivations are set apart from the main text
so that a more "casual" reader can skip over the derivations and still get
some benefit from the text (and believe me, the math parts of this book are
very involved!). The authors assume a working knowledge of trigonometry,
calculus and linear algebra (although you could likely make some sense of the
book even if you're rusty in any of these areas). However, since the book
is about probability, you'll probably need some background in probability
theory to get any value from this text. Chapter 2 contains a refresher on
probability theory, but I doubt it would be enough to decipher the later
chapters if you had no background in the subject. I found myself having to
go back and look up the details of Bayes Rule and multivariate conditional
probability more than once.

My only gripe with this book is that each chapter includes suggested exercises
(good) but no answers/cross-check (bad). Especially considering the open-ended
nature of the exercises, it's almost not worth attempting them (or even reading
them), since you'll never know if you got the right answer, or were even on the
right track. There's no "student supplement" (at least not as I write this),
so the exercises are fairly pointless.

However, that aside, this is one of the best academic books I've read in a very
long time. I had been struggling through academic papers from IEEE and ACM on
the topic of SLAM, and only comprehending about half of it before I picked up
"Probabilistic Robotics". After reading this book carefully (I actually had
to read it twice to get it all to sink in), I'm actually zipping through the
academic papers, and understanding everything I read. You couldn't ask for a
better introduction to probabilistic robotics and SLAM.

Learn the material elsewhere, and then read this book

Think of a situation where you had an extremely good lecturer for some subject at uni. The lecturer explained everything very nicely using a host of slides, examples etc. Now, if after the lectures you go back and look at the slides again, you'll probably understand what the slides mean and remember what the lecturer said with regard to each slide. But, as is typical in any course, the slides doesn't contain all the information you learnt during the course. The explanations from the lecturer were critical in understanding the slides.

Now, think of the situation where someone who didn't attend the course, try to learn the subject, just by reading through the slides. This is generally extremely difficult. especially because the slides themselves doesn't contain all the information required to comprehend them.

This book is exactly that. It's a set of slides from a good lecture, but without the important other bits of information required to properly comprehend the ideas presented with it. I feel that the authors assume that the readers already know what they are talking about, and goes on skipping over the details required to properly grasp those concepts. If you've already learnt the topics in the book from by some other means, then you'll be able to understand what the authors are trying to say, and would end up ranking this book as an excellent book. But, my question is, if you already knew those things, why would you read this book in the first place.

BUT, it's not a worthless book. Few of the sections are explained in a very intuitive manner. Also, it's a good book for those who already know the concepts, but want to put them altogether in a coherent manner, with respect to robotics. Also, it is a good source for those who are looking for a list of state-of-the-art algorithms in mobile robotics.

Roy Bates first became captivated by Chinese dragons when working in the country in the late 1970s, and has since written numerous articles on the dragon, the Forbidden City, and other aspects of Chinese culture and history.

Excellent book on Dragons

For many centuries that the dragon has been the symbol of China, and has been considered as immortal and omnipresent ever since ancient times. It has belonged to the people, and it has also been the symbol of monarchy and supreme power. The dragon was a mythical beast. It was a concept. But most Chinese people, indeed most Asian people, were convinced that it existed. There are many occasions when there were claims that it had been seen, even as recently as 1920. No other creature in the world could have produced such a far-reaching influence on the mind of man.
Unlike the European dragon, it was considered a beneficent beast, until the Buddhists introduced the concept of evil dragons. Yet the basic belief was always that it had noble spiritual qualities that were unconquerable.
This book has been written by an author who has lived for many years in China researching into its history. It is in an easy-to-read style and is dedicated to the dragon and its many offshoots and variations. The pictures are delightful. It gives details of what a dragon was, where it was used, and what it was called. The reader will become more acquainted with the dragon, and will gain a greater understanding of this magnificent beast. It will interest and please the serious student and the enthusiastic Chinaphile alike.
It would make a perfect Christmas present.

An excellent source and a labour of love

This book, though short, provides a remarkably detailed survey of the Chinese dragon as represented in the art of his native land. Beginning with an overview of early dragon representations and possible sources of inspiration, Mr. Bates' book goes to considerable effort to describe the many variant images and beliefs that may be found regarding dragons throughout China. I have a hard time finding the kind of information brought together here - dragons in architecture, dragons as represented on dragon robes, the beings and images popularly represented as sons of the dragon - anywhere other than highly specialized scholarly tomes. Finding as much as Mr. Bates has put forth in Chinese Dragons in such an accessible volume is a remarkably pleasant surprise. The twenty-four colour plates are just about worth the price of admission all by themselves. The author clearly knows and loves his subject.

Best Java EE Book I've Found

I've tried a few Java EE books, and this is the best one I've found for beginners. As another reviewer said, getting the examples up and running can be a bit challenging as there's not a great walkthrough of configuring and setting up your environment. Other than that, it's a great book.

Very useful book

This book delivers on it's promise.
I started to read it as a complete neophyte and now after I've finished it I have a solid understading of the Java EE platform. It gave me enough of an understanding, that with a help from some online manuals I can start developing Java EE applications.

I'd happily give it 5 stars if it were not for some typos and small editing mistakes I noticed.

Great book but not e-ink friendly.

This book has been a great aid in progressing from Java SE to Java EE development. The author gets to the point without a whole lot of fluff.

My reason for the three stars is due to how the code sections are illustrated. If you're reading on your phone or tablet you should be OK. On e-ink devices (e.g. kindle keyboard) however, the code sections are barely visible. They seem to show up as very bad grey scale images. The rest of the book's content is displayed fine. Surely there must be a better way to format the code sections for e-ink devices.

"The First Tell-All Book On Hollywood"

Nearly everyone has heard of Christina Crawford's book "Mommie Dearest", first published in the fall of 1978, which was then turned into a hit Paramount film in 1981 starring Faye Dunaway. To say that Christina was faced with harshed criticisms after the book's publication is an understatement. Not only did Christina bring child abuse issues to the forefront while detailing abuse can happen to those in Hollywood as the children of celebrities, she also depicted a beloved Oscar-winning actress as a drunken, controlling, mentally unbalanced woman who cared more about her public image than she did about her first two adopted children. Christina even faced several death threats when she was doing the book's publicity tour as ardent Joan Crawford fans rallied together to stop Christina from telling her story, reasoning their idol's name was being tarnished, while at the same time perhaps being faced with their own issues on child abuse.

I am a Joan Crawford fan. I love her. Ask anyone who knows me. My home is filled with photos of Joan in my home. I even have an autograph letter of Joan's that grace's my office wall that I purchased on an auction site for a great deal of money. I still, however, unlike many Joan Crawford enthusiasts, believe Christina's allegations about her mother. I believe you can still admire someone and love their work, but at the same time you must realize none of us in this world are perfect, and Joan, from the countless books and articles I have read about her, was far from the impeccable woman she projected.

Joan herself was abused as a young girl, first by her mother then various school teachers. It is well documented as well in book and video form that Joan suffered her fair share of physical punches from various lovers over the years. Often those who have been abused turn into physically violent individuals. It is also well-known that Joan had mental issues that went untreated right up until the time of her death because those who loved her, as well as various business associates, were too afraid to confront her about these issues, afraid they would be dismissed from Joan's life.

What also happens in families where abuse exists is that the parent who is doing the abusing often attacks certain children where the others are never touched or shouted at which explains Christina's sister's claims that they were never "touched". Still, one documented interview with one of the Joan's twins in 1981 states that, "Mother never touched us. Sure you'd get a swat once in awhile, but none of the physical beatings my sister talks about". This would be referred to as denial because whenever a parent physically hits a child it is abuse plain and simple.

Due to "Mommie Dearest'" enormous success and poularity Christina has rereleased the book for a "30th Anniversary Edition". Christina knew there were many who had never read the original book upon its initial release and she knew the importance that her own personal horror story is to those who may have suffered the same torture. This edition features over 100 new pages omitted from the 1978 book edition along with new photos, as well as a chapter from individuals who have come forward to state they saw the abuse Christina claims happened to her.

Yes, we must love our stars and respect them, but we must also realize actors are human beings with frailties and shortcomings that we all possess. Ignoring that cardinal rule is giving credence to celebrities to do whatever they want to do which is not only a disservice to them but to everyone in the world at large. Perhaps if someone had indeed confronted Joan about her abrupt upbringing of her kids she would not have the reputation she has today.

The book is a good as it was when it first came out but now it has a little extra added in that was not in the original publication. A nice surprise is that Christina is actually selling this book here on Amazon and she signs it for you. You have to make sure to buy it from her company though.

Roller coaster

I felt like I was on a roller coaster reading this book. The author, Christina Crawford, must have felt the same way living with the mother who alternately spoiled and abused both her and her brother Christopher. Joan Crawford was talented, driven, and completely insane; this book chronicles many of Crawford's eccentricities in great detail, from the point of view of her two neglected children. It also includes several testimonials from people who were around when Christina was left without clothing, left for a year in boarding schools, and left with the idea that her mother had adopted her for the publicity.

It is disappointing to read that the two youngest Crawford children denied that any abuse took place. The various testimonials from Christina's classmates, teachers, and Joan Crawford's friend Helen Hayes speak volumes. I would call this denial by the younger Crawford children second-hand abuse.

Contradicting what some negative reviews here on Amazon say, the author has also included some happy moments with her mother in this autobiography, including the author's childhood trips to the coast, her 15th birthday party, a (mostly) wonderful trip to Europe, the surprise vehicle, and several years in Christina's adulthood where Joan seemed genuinely loving to her daughter. Perhaps this material is only included in the 30th anniversary edition, which is the version I've just read.

There are several typographical errors in this edition, but not as many as I had expected from the Amazon reviews.
