More Peices to the puzzle, but...

July 2014: Since writing many book reviews of the past, much has changed, I have discovered much more. I have come to see and have had exposed many of the deceptions and errors associated with Gnosticism, this even after becoming a Gnostic priest. My faith in Christ has been my anchor and I press on with him who shed his blood for me. I am tempted to delete many of my reviews, as I have already done; time will tell.

I enjoyed reading this book, as it is a very informative and easy book to read. There is a lot to learn when it comes to Egyptian Deities and this book gives some nice insights. A very good breakdown when it comes to Nut, Geb and Shu and their function in creation. Dr. Muata Ashby also gives a very good explanation of the Obelisk and Ankh and their esoteric sexual meanings. I was glad to see that this book included some sexual sublimation exercises although brief and simplistic. Still, this may be a good thing. What I also found most beautiful were the insights and connections to Christian esotericism.

This book is by no means exhaustive when it comes to information on Tantra. It does however have many beautiful insights into the Egyptian Tantra mysteries, while holding that one abstains from losing ones sexual energy. My one big problem that I have with this book is Dr Muata Ashby's view that Tantra can be performed just as effectively through celibacy. Still, he mentions that if you are married to not think that you are worse off than a celibate person and to remain married. I hold that Tantra performed by a couple can produce greater energies and potentials than of a single person. This is of course for couples who both have the goal of spiritual advancement at heart. I am of course talking about White Tantra as opposed to grey or Black (even exluding morality, the latter are a waste of time ultimately). I am however glad to see that Dr Muata Ashby does say that marriage provides a great environment for people to work on themselves. I have ordered five more of Dr Muata Ashby's other books and am especially eager to read on the laws of Maat. On the whole a very worth while book to read for those interested in Tantra and liberation.

Eye Opening Book

This book really broke down the purpose of sexuality. The author clearly articulated the purpose of tantric yoga ; and yoga as a whole. I learned a lot about how the sexual energy should be used , and it's divine purpose.

Great insights! And a splendid vision of how things can be.

There are many books on Leadership that have little to say. Sinek's book has both new insights and an inspiring vision.

Sinek begins with biology and outlines the roles of chemicals - specifically Endorphins, Dopamine, Serotonin and Oxytocin - and how evolution has dictated why we generate them and how we respond to them. Endorphins mask pain and help give you a `runner's high' or the intense satisfaction after a tough work out.

Dopamine leads to your `feeling good' upon accomplishing a goal whether that is bringing home dinner while evading sabre-toothed tigers or doing a bang-up job on a major presentation. Think of endorphins and Dopamine as the `individual achievement' chemicals. We need them to excel at what we do.

Serotonin is what gives you a feeling of gratitude and affection for the persons who supported you in your endeavors and the good feeling as they applaud you. Oxytocin is `love' chemical. It gives you the warm fuzzies you get when you hug someone or have a deep meaningful conversation. Think of Serotonin and Oxytocin as the `social' chemicals.

We, as humans, need both the individual achievement and social chemicals to progress. What has happened, unfortunately, in our society is that mores and values have changed to emphasize the former to such an extent that a deadly imbalance has been created. It is truly toxic - your job may be killing you. I used to think this was hyperbole but Sinek presents enough evidence for me to revise this opinion.

Central to Sinek's arguments is the `Circle of Safety'. When a sabre-toothed tiger attacks a herd of buffalos they gather together with their tails touching and horns out. Whichever direction that tiger attacks, it is met with impenetrable defense. This is the circle of safety. We want to feel that there are persons we can trust who will look out for us. Where we can let our guard down and be ourselves.

In such a trusting environment we can focus on doing the best we can and this greatly benefits both us, individually, the company. This feeling of `belonging' is what has disappeared from the corporate workplace to a large extent. It has been replaced by an ethos of `everyone for himself and the Devil take the hindmost'. And, sadly, even the `winners' in this environment are actually losers because of the personal price they pay in terms of insecurity and lack of meaningful relations, not to mention health side effects.

What I found really useful in the book is the way in which Sinek takes concepts from fields such as psychology and shows how they are relevant to what we experience in the workplace. I found these to be penetrating insights and they lead to many `aha' moments as well as to a change in the way I conduct some of my own programs.

For example, take the Milgram experiments. These are some of the best known - and most shocking - experiments in psychology and the implications are truly horrifying. In the early sixties, shortly after the Adolf Eichmann capture, trial and execution, there was a lively debate on whether Nazi collaborators were simply `following orders' or had a sense of responsibility and ownership for what they did.

Yale professor Stanley Milgram devised a series of experiments in which a volunteer was asked to deliver electric shocks to a subject each time he made an `error' in a lesson. Unbeknownst to the volunteer the subject was actually a confederate of the professor and an actor who affected great pain and suffering as the level of electric shocks increased. In reality there were no shocks and no pain but the volunteer did not know this.

When volunteers demurred from administering painful electric shocks the white gowned Milgram told them in various ways that they were required to continue even when they thought that the shocks they were administering were severely harmful to the subject.

The shocking result was that huge numbers of `normal' persons - readily or with mild trepidation - continued to administer potentially lethal shocks to subjects even as they howled with pain and demanded that they be released from the experiment. And this happened simply because they were told to do so by an `authority figure' with no threats or rewards for doing so.

Obviously this has great implications for why dictatorships form and survive and the debate on this continues to this day.

What Sinek points out is that this same experiment is played out in our companies every day at huge human toll. I had never thought of it in these terms before but parallel is exact. Many `managers' willingly take actions that they know will bring hardship and suffering to others - mass layoffs, reductions in benefits, changes in working conditions etc. - simply because they have been directed to do so. Even worse, we have evolved a business `philosophy' where formal directions are no longer necessary - this is simply the way to do things.

Sinek talks about how to bring the balance back in our workplace so both companies and individuals can thrive side by side in a symbiotic relationship. And he gives lots of examples such as the Barry Wehmiller companies where CEO Bob Chapman is dedicated to `building great people who do extraordinary things. And Charlie Kim, CEO of Next Jump who implemented a policy of lifetime employment.

I particularly like his comparison of the results achieved by James Sinegal, CEO of Costco and Jack Welch the much touted former CEO of General Electric. Welch's paradigm of pitting executives against each other created a high stress environment and the gains were short-lived and unsustainable.

In contrast Sinegal built a strong `circle of safety' for his people, paid wages which were nearly double those at Walmart and did many things to engender loyalty and trust. Costco employees are loyal and have built it into the second largest retailer in the country and the growth is both balanced and continuing.

This book will make you think differently about the business systems that prevail in our society and also give you a way to make the workplace more humane.

A very different view of management

I previously read "Start With Why" and really enjoyed it. That book helped to completely reframe the way I viewed business and the big picture. I was very excited to get a chance to read this book. Initially, I thought it would give a fuller explaination of how the Marines create greater sensitivity in their leaders. In a way, it did this although actually, the book was much more of a scientific study on the chemistry of management. I think it's interesting how Simon related biological chemicals that we all have to better management. The concept of a Circle of Safety and treating each employee as if you are their second parent is also interesting. I think in particular the end of the book where Simon talks about how the current generation feels entitled to quick success is very enlightening and very true. The ultimate point of the book is that if a leader watches out for their people and commits their whole organization to serve others and each other, everyone wins. It's easier said than done, but it's a very good reminder of the importance of going beyond just chasing financial gain.

(Re) Stating the Obvious--Interesting Read But Nothing New

I really tried to give this book a higher rating but just couldn't. While I can't quibble with anything Sinek says, he says nothing that hasn't been said by dozens of other authors. The point of his book: Leaders need to care for others, protect them from harm, provide opportunities for them to grow and develop, create a vision of something to believe in that's larger than themselves, and take an interest--a genuine interest--in the well-being of their followers.

There's a great deal of hand wringing in this book, but almost no "how-to" that can be applied in everyday organizations. He even uses the word "polemic" late in the book as a description of what he's writing. We all know what needs to be done, but very few of us are doing it.

Yes, it was interesting to read about brain chemicals and current brain research. And it was okay to read some of his comparisons between/among companies that see profit as the purpose versus those companies that see profit as a means to greater purpose. The problem is that all of this could have been stated in a pamphlet, rather than a 216-page book. And, just as his TED talk on "Start With Why" offered everything in that book, his 99U video offers everything in this book--in less than 45 minutes.

I recommend lots of books to students in my leadership development classes but, in this case, I'll recommend that the students watch Sinek's videos and save their money.

i found this book by accident here on amazon, and what a find!

it's set out like a fast and furious handbook on the elements of style and the major game-changers of the last century. the images are excellent, and many of them would be suitable for framing.

the cover of the book lists several of the 100 ideas that are in the book, but a smattering of my favorites are as follows:

the delphos gown
royals and politicians
photographs and magazines (the image on page 24 by cecil beaton is stunning)
costume jewelry (the image here of coco chanel is beautiful)
the bias cut
surrealism
the fashion show as theatrical spectacle
disposable fashion
low-key luxury

these bite-size sections are the perfect length to whet the appetite, and the images are well selected to accompany each two page topic.

quite simply, this is a wonderful and informative book at a very reasonable price!

Great Brief History on Fashion

If you're looking for a book that gives you a brief overview of many of fashions historical milestones, this is it. Wonderful for anyone interested in divining into fashion and a fun read in general. I do wish some of the entries were more in-depth, but that really isn't the purpose of this book (at least the way it seemed to me), it's really more of a reference or an entree into fashion.

Great for fashion history, not for societal reaction

This book was good, but that was all. It was very vague at some points and did not go into detail. I understand the point of the book was to explain how fashion affected itself but i would have liked to know more about the societal reaction and struggle that some clothes went through. It's a great book for fashion history and turning points in that, but not for culturally. It talked more about the clothes than how they really changed fashion.

Very useful textbook

I noted the negative comment here and felt I needed to comment about the "bad statistics".
There is not just one chapter about statistics and I found this book useful in completing my own doctorate research.
I found this book useful and very practical.
I have also used this text with my own students who have themselves found it helpful.
I don't know what the "errors" are, but as a student and professor I would recommend this book.

Don't Buy this book

I bought this book to learn how to repair my instruments. This book has a lot of information, but it doesn't teach well. There's plenty of text (273 pgs full of them), but no pictures (i mean there's not enough...it needs more pictures!!!) to complement. I wish there were pictures of the tools so I can visually see through the lengthy text. Most of the visual aids are drawn like 2d cartoon. Don't waste your money like me on buying this book. I wish I can return the book because I don't have the patience to learn instrument repair from this book. I hope this helps your decision for purchasing this book.

Good overview of woodwind repair.

Bought this mostly for the saxophone section. Provides a good overview of the basic techniques for woodwind maintenance and repair. Uses the clarinet as an example for basic techniques (so don't skip it), then explains specifics for other instruments. Clear and informative, if a little expensive. But it's a specialty book, so that's expected. Recommended.

If you are a keen repairer of woodwind instruments or just a player who wants to save a bit of money,this book is a diffinite buy. There are only three books in existance for this field, the second being Brands band Instrument Repair manual. Both of which are as useful as each other.
If you work out the cost of having your instrument fixed over a few years, you will automatically see how much you can learn about your intrument and how much you can save.
I refer to my copy as my bible and i am sure you will with yours in years to come.

Bushong's book excellent for a whole range of people who want to understand the fundamentals of MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Physical and Biological Principles

This book is remarkable in the way that it explains the fundamentals of MRI so clearly while using very, very few equations. Prof. Bushong uses a huge number of tremendously creative -- and often funny -- illustrations to achieve this accomplishment. Although this book is naturally insufficient for those desiring a fully mathematical understanding of MRI, it is ideal (except for its lack of discussion of Functional MRI) for those who want a firm visual understanding of MRI physics, and it is also one of those rare books that explains so many practical details of *actually using* MRI machines -- their possible dimensions, strength, weight, associated costs, associated building requirements, etc. It could also be a great first read for those who will eventually delve into the subject mathematically, and finally, could be an excellent book for a physician, nurse, businessperson, or layperson who won't have to directly deal with MRI but who wants to have a solid grasp of how it works. I strongly recommend this book!

This edition is far superior to the first. Descriptions of pulse sequences are easily understood and the diagrams are very useful. Folks that like Peggy Woodwards' book will find this one very similar.
It's worth the price for technologists studying for the national registry or just looking for a better understanding of MRI

This book makes the complex understandable!!!!

This text is the third MRI book I have approached. I spent a week on the first chapters of others, esp the supposed "Bible" of MRI, written by the two women. I wish I had not wasted my money on their new book. I was wondering if applying to MRI school was a mistake. Bushong's book is put together so that

anyone can understand the complex physics involved. You "get it" on the first read. That is wonderful by me.

What Africans can do about it

This is a substantial book (about 500 pages), but is written in a current affairs style and designed to be readable by anyone with a basic knowledge of economics. The point of the book is really in the subtitle 'and what Africans can do about it'. Greg Mills does not think that it is up to the developed world to solve Africas' problems. To state the obvious, this approach has not worked in the past and he spends a lot of time explaining why this will not work in the future either.
A large proportion of the book is not about Africa at all. He spends a large chunk of the first half of the book discussing various reasons (or excuses) given for the relative failure of African nations to grow and for each reason, he finds another nation elsewhere in the world that has had the opposite experience.
In the end, he points out that nations that showed spectacular economic growth e.g. Singapore, were led by leaders and governments who were obsessed by economic growth and staked their reputations on achieving it.
Even though there are many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, each with their own story, the central theme is lack of interest by governments on how to realistically achieve growth. One of the strengths of this book is that Greg Mills does not use words like 'probably', 'might' or 'could be the reason'. He basically points to this one issue as the central problem.
The only minor disappointment I had was the relative lack personal conversations with government officials themselves. There are several, but more would have helped illustrate the issues better. There is a good set of journeys/ examples that he uses to drive home comparisons. A good example is his description of the difference between leaving the Congo (barely a country) and entering Rwanda (quite well run):
"The Rwandan road was not perfect, but was an autobahn in comparison to the Congolese side. It was the difference apparently between having a government and a regime that preys on its people"
This really drove home the point in very few words, but more first-hand interviews would have helped illustrate some quite complex topics and made the (500 page) book more fascinating, I think.

Why is Africa the way it is?

How can one analyse the problems in Africa without appearing to be Racist?

This is the mind blowing age old question. Dr Greg Mills of the Brenthurst Foundation has solved this problem in this book.

The book is a fascinating read and it compares countries and continents that have been occupied / invaded by foreigners and "imperialists" over the past hundred years and then compares them with African countries.

He looks at Asia and South America amongst others and compares their post nationalisation and post civil war growth and policies with those of Africa and his findings are startling.

This is one of those books that cannot be read quickly and where lots of thinking about what Dr Mills is saying is required. I am still on the first part of the book about why Africa is poor, but I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand why Africa and Africans are in the state they are.

I'll write more once I am finished the book and once I have read what we can do about it. Note that having been born in Africa, I consider myself an African!

Good read

This book is good if know nothing or a lot. I've read a few restaurant start up books and this one gave me a few tips I didn't know. It's not a long read. I'd recommend it to anyone who is thinking about opening a coffee shop. Or someone who already has a shop and is looking for a few new ideas.
