This book is fantastic. It's a quick read with lots of great content from personal experiences, to stories of what not to do. Then great insight on how to change your mindset. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to change there lifestyle and get in the business owner mentality as well as anyone looking to invest in realestate.

The art is beautiful; the instruction, not so much.

I love the art used to illustrate this book. It is truly beautiful, balanced in color and composition, and has unusual uses of household items in the making of it. Obviously, the two authors are very good artists and are quite adept at evoking emotion in their works.

However, they are not very good at telling other artists how they do what they do.

Most of the instruction for every technique they present is so briefly presented (at most a paragraph or three) that important details are left out. For example, in the instructions on using waxed paper as a resist, they don't tell you whether to put the paper on the substrate wax side down or up before heating it with an iron. Now, yes, obviously one would put it face down, but it would have taken three words to express that detail. Or, the sentences which state: "Many collage artists use treated papers as elements in their paintings. Geri rubs silver polish or sandpaper on magazine papers laid over stencils." There is no mention made of what this technique does exactly, and the paintings used to illustrate this do not make clear where the technique was used, leaving the reader unsure exactly of what the author is trying to convey.

As inspiration, the art in this book is amazing.

Just don't expect the authors to explain very well what they are doing when they are creating their works.

A Word to the Wise

Where were Gary Winters and "What Your Boss Never Told You" when I really needed it? Here I am at the end of my career and I finally read a management book that encapsulates 40 years of learning the hard way. It is not so much a "how to" book as a "heads-up things to think about" book. I might have titled it "A Word to the Wise". The author doesn't try to provide pat solutions to every management situation, but makes the reader aware of what to look for to avoid managerial pitfalls. I couldn't find a single chapter where I didn't have an anecdote that supported author's assertions. As I began each chapter I tried to anticipate what I thought were important points to make and I was not once disappointed. It doesn't matter where you are in your management career "What Your Boss Never Told You" is a great starting place for a new manager or an excellent refresher for the seasoned veteran.

Like Operating a Floor Sander!

This is an excellent, valuable book. I've read numerous management and supervision books over the years. Some were notable. Most of the others quickly became forgettable. "What Your Boss Never Told You" is one of the very best I've come across, and here's why. Gary Winters has a wonderful knack for getting right to the point, concisely and clearly. So, as a "read," the 120 pages of WYBNTY breeze along nicely. The other equally important aspect of this book is that Winters has made these management stories and lessons REAL. There is virtually nothing intellectual or scholastic about this book - and I seriously mean this as a high complement. Winters takes us for a walk through real workplaces, with real stories and real people trying to figure out how to become better managers. This book is chock full of practical tangible, useful wisdom. I've been a manager for fifteen years, and I learned a lot from the lessons and stories in WYBNTY. It's right up there with "Leadership Jazz" in my short list of greatest books about effective management and leadership. And Winters is right - I didn't know it until I had it comfirmed by this book, but managing people IS indeed like operating a floor sander!

A must read for new managers

This book is exactly what every new supervisor/manager needs to help him or her navigate the first 6 months in the new role! The issues that Winters has illustrated generally don't come up in management training, but they are vital to understand. This book isn't about "skill building," it's about the unexpected isses that pop up and require some thinking. Having this book is like having a mentor who knows just what you are dealing with and provides great advice!

Lt. Lynn "Buck" Compton has been a collegiate sports star, esteemed war veteran, detective, attorney, and judge. As a college athlete, Compton competed alongside legends such as Jackie Robinson. Among combat veterans, Lt. Lynn "Buck" Compton's name and autograph are recognized internationally along with Dick Winters, "Wild" Bill Guarnere, and Don Malarkey. As a second lieutenant during World War II, Compton commanded the second platoon of Easy Company in the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Division. He parachuted into Normandy during the early hours of D-Day, was part of the assault group that destroyed the German artillery during the battle at Brecourt Manor, fought on the line at Carentan, helped liberate Holland during Operation Market Garden, and fought in the freezing cold of the Battle of Bastogne.As a combat veteran, Lt. Compton received the Silver Star for valor in the face of the enemy, the Purple Heart for being wounded while in the U.S. military; the World War II Victory Medal for active duty during World War II; the Orange Lanyard of the Royal Netherlands Army for bravery, leadership, and loyalty in the defense of the Netherlands; the Combat Infantry Badge; the American Campaign Citation; and the American Defense Medal. Compton, along with his unit, was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism against an armed enemy when holding the main line of resistance during the Battle of the Bulge.Compton served as deputy district attorney for L.A. County from 1951 to 1970 and had extensive trial experience involving the prosecution of major felony cases of all types. He handled a number of high-profile cases, including the prosecution of Sirhan Sirhan for the murder of Robert F. Kennedy. In 1970, Compton was appointed to the California Courts of Appeal as an associate justice.Compton is a sought-after speaker, and in his spare time, he provides policy and political commentary on a radio station based in Anacortes. He currently lives in the Pacific Northwest. Marcus Brotherton, a professional writer, is the author or coauthor of seventeen books. A former newspaper reporter, Marcus holds a master's degree with an emphasis in writing from Biola University. He has collaborated on memoirs with Dr. Nancy Heche (mother of actress Anne Heche), former Playboy playmate turned international humanitarian Susan Scott Krabacher, and Sparrow Clubs USA executive director Jeff Leeland on a tribute book about children in medical crises. Excellent Read

This is an enjoyable, entertaining and inspirational account of Buck Compton's life! Buck is extremely honest, candid and humble in this account of his accomplishments and set backs! I wish I could have read this book when I was younger. It's a shining example of what a guy can do with hard work, a good attitude and a friendly demeanor.
Very interesting to read about the war and E. Company from another officer's perspective. Thus far, Dick Winters is the only E. Company officer (that I know of) who has written about this group of extraordinary men.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the men of the Greatest Generation.

A Full-Broadsided Body Punch To Conventional Wisdom!

This book is a thoughtful and thought-provoking examination of both the meaning of and the consequences associated with the rising computer information cult within contemporary society. Roszak is a skilled writer and an even more perceptive thinker. He quickly disposes of the contemporary idea equating data or information, on the one hand, with knowledge and wisdom, on the other hand. He despairs of the notion that technological progress is an unalloyed blessing, and provides a lot of supporting documentation illustrating that for all those capabilities we gain through the use of digital technology, for example, we also lose important capabilities and perspectives.
According to Roszak, we have now come to almost rely on exclusively rational,"logical", and quantifiable methods of understanding everything around us, often to the detriment of ignoring more traditional and time-honored methods of knowing. This, in turn, leads to a very narrow perspective of how it is that the world operates, one devoid of anything not quantitative, anything comprised of more "qualitative" means of observation. He fears for good reason that we are falling into a hyperbolized and superficial culture where we have come to completely depend on scientific rationalism as it is depicted by the media, and that this creates a conundrum we cannot escape from, since many of the problems associated with modern society stem from this increasingly exlusively scientific and rational approach toward problem-solving.
As with other contemporary critics of the new Digital Intelligence cult like social critic Neil Postman, Roszak argues for a more comprehensive perspective , one that places the tools of computer technology at the behest of a more broad-based intelligence, one that recognizes that there is a whole range of ways of knowing and understanding that those contained in programming code. This is a provocative and thought-indicing book. I enjoyed and learned from it, and recommend it to anyone who enjoys watching a superior intellect at work, and who also appreciated the thread of a finely-hewn intellectual argument. Enjoy!

I wasn't sure what to expect from a "neo-Luddite" treatise, but this book was very readable and interesting, a good counterpart to all the rah-rah hype of the tech industry. It was originally published in 1986, so some of it is dated, but the ideas Roszak expresses are still relevant and important.

Roszak is not anti-technology, but he warns that the over-emphasis on using computers and computer algorithms to substitute for things like teaching, labor, economic forecasting, etc. are undermining the value of human thought, ideas and creativity. He argues that computer technology should be used as a tool, not an end in itself.

I wish that this book was updated or that Roszak would write something else that addresses the rise of social media and mobile technology, but as it is, I think it's a really good introduction to critical thinking about technology and how it is shaping our world.

some factual information can be spread far and wide without making a deep impression. technology based on electric power provides people with some up to the minute anticipation of what to expect, but transition failures are too common in societies that have basic beliefs like Faust means fist in German.
