A great book on Afghan society.

This is a great book on the details of Abdur Rahman Khan's reign by Hasan Kawun Kakar, one of the most eminent scholars on Afghanistan. Few books in English better describe the society, politics, military affairs, and economics of a specific ruler in Afghan history. Abdur Rahman Khan (the "Iron Emir") set up the centralized state system in Afghanistan that lasts to this day. It is hard to understand the details and background to modern Afghan politics without this book.
