About the Author
Walter Harris was born in London in 1866, one of seven children of a prosperous business man. After schooling at Harrow and a short time at Cambridge, he left England to travel, and managed to visit Constantinople, India, Egypt, Archangel, Yemen and South Africa before settling in Tangier at the age of 20. He worked as a journalist, eventually salaried on The Times, continued to travel, like an English Indiana Jones, to areas of the Middle East never previously visited by Europeans, and built four houses in Tangier. He married once, though he was predominantly homosexual, and died of a stroke in 1933.

Harris was a Times correspondent from the 1900s Morocco who witnessed the tumultuous transition from quasi-independent sultanate to French occupation. Yet he was also much more - an insider with access to the court and the sultan, someone who could move with relative freedom across the country occupied by a rapacious government, semi-independent Berber tribes, prosperous Jews who were mostly left to their devices milking hapless Arabs through any imaginable sort of trade, assorted bandits and Italian, Spanish and German spies. Morocco was a strategic pawn in the maneuvering between European powers; Harris documents with tragic precision how Europeans manipulated the hapless well-meaning but weak sultan Mulai Abdul Aziz with gimmicks, tricks and toys. The country was held together by force represented by sultan's army and sultan himself - capricious, unfair, childlike, brutal, controlled by a scheming vizier yet, in a weird way, innocent. Everyone was out to deceive him and suck him dry, so sultan used Harris as (perhaps his only trustworthy) adviser for politics, etiquette, European gadgetry and fun. Harris, after all, was a pukka sahib in the best possible sense of that designation, with an unflappable confidence and courage of the English gentleman (they don't make'em anymore).

There are priceless descriptions of the country and its people. Audiences with the sultan, sumptuous meals, court intrigues. Harris has much affection for the country even as he documents the cruelty, avarice, brutality, naivete, sufferings - but also generosity and expansiveness of its people. Then, as today, walking the corridors of the casbah meant every man for himself. In Harris' view, the French brought sorely needed stability to the country, together with the security and prosperity to the middle classes of Morocco. One can see the legacy of the French today in the roads, the language and bureaucracy.

The book is often light-hearted and funny. It's also sad even a bit incredulous when describing the sufferings of the people at the hands of the powerful. Above all, it provides a priceless glimpse in a world that was. If you are contemplating a visit - read this book.

Walter Harris, London Times correspondant and 30 year inhabitant of Tangier, delivers the diffinitive account of pre-protectorate Morocco and the Moroccan Royal Courts. This eyewitness account of an ancient culture coming to grips with an overwhelming Western influence is both absorbing and hillarious to the point of disbelief. Harris' tales of Berber rebels and a matter-of-fact Sultanry, in addition to his coverage of the inevitabile process of European colonialization, captures the loss of innocence which befell a still vital land. A must read for anyone interested in North African history.

About the Author

David C. Evans is senior manager of customer research at Microsoft, where he influences the design and positioning of Office 365, Cortana, Windows 10, Skype, Outlook, Yammer, and the Office Graph. He managed GfK’s retail research for Microsoft in 44 countries, established a psychographic segmentation at Allrecipes.com, and ran the usability firm Psychster Inc. in Seattle, where he consulted for Amazon and the States of Washington and Oregon. His whitepapers, cowritten with enterprise clients, have appeared on TechCrunch, Mashable, and MediaPost, and he is a frequent guest on American Public Media’s Marketplace. LOVE IT - would recommend to anyone and advise all who are debating to grab a copy!

As a recent college graduate with a BS in Psychology and a minor and Computer Science, I can say that this book brought a lot of real-world insight to how we can apply simple psychological concepts in the design everyday products to make our daily use of applications, websites, and overall technology a productive and intuitive addition to our lives rather than a burden or something inefficient one has to struggle through to get the end result.

If you are debating getting this book, just do it! The amount of insight in Bottlenecks is immeasurable. The structure and language is extremely easy to absorb as David (author) covers dense psychological and design principles. The way he applies one to the other and shows the reader through examples we have lived through or struggled with really allows the concepts to sync with readers more easily than other similar books.

The perspective this book has is unique but very important. I found the content immensely invaluable - I have been and will continue to share what I've learned in Bottlenecks with peers, family, and those in my workspace.

Global reporting, great writing, straight-shooting story-telling.

This was a fascinating examination of a business whose story is too often told by Amway loyalists or disgruntled former insiders. As a reader who is neither -- nor, for that matter, a big fan of business histories in general -- I can say Amway Forever breaks out of the genre. I imagine it will be of interest to readers in a large, general audience. Amway Forever also takes the reader around the world with the author's meticulous research. Crisp, clear writing makes Amway Forever a breeze to read. Amway Forever gives balanced treatment to the controversies that have dogged the company throughout its history as well as the company's successes as it spreads around the globe -- both without the cooperation of the company itself, no small feat. But given that the author is a distinguished business and magazine writer and newspaper editor with a long list of professional accolades, what else would you expect? Amway Forever is a five-star read.

Surprise! A Really Good Read

A friend of mine gave me this book for my birthday, probably remembering a conversation we had about our mothers, their friends and direct-sales parties they held or attended years ago. "Oh, thanks. That sounds interesting," I said, not really meaning it. But several days ago I woke up before the newspapers arrived and looked for something to read. Three hours later I put the book down when my stomach really started growling for breakfast. The next day I finished this story of determination, drive and, perhaps, a little hanky-panky on the way to incredible success. And the lawsuits and the politics. Wow! I had no idea. I thought the author handled the story right down the middle, producing neither a propaganda piece for the company nor an over-the-top expose. I'm going to order a copy for another friend whom I think would enjoy it. Maybe I'll ask him to do the same for another friend who can do it for another friend, etc. We might even have little parties to talk about the book. Hey, this sounds a little bit like something I read about recently. Not as profitable, of course.

Excellent and easy read

I had heard of Amway many years ago and the lawsuits they filed or were filed against them. Then suddenly they seemed to drop off the face of the earth. I wondered what had happened to them. I read Amway Forever and now I know. The book is very balanced and tells both sides of the story in excellent detail. (I'm still not sure who the bad guy is in this business.) The story behind this company makes for interesting reading and the author brings the various characters involved to life and tells how the company grew and fell and grew again. There is a lot of information on what happens in a company as it is born and lives. It is not only a fascinating story but Ms. Jones tells it well. The book is easy to read and follow unlike so many business books. And the great thing is that it gets better and better with each chapter. At the end I wanted more.

By 1905, Russia's multiple weaknesses required a prolonged period of external peace by eliminating frictions with the principal rival powers, Britain and Germany, while France and Britain realised that a British rapprochement with Russia would be necessary to counter Germany's power. Benckendorff, as one of the most important figures in the Russian diplomatic service, persuaded Nicholas II and his Foreign Minister, V.N. Lamsdorff, to drop their objections to various long-standing British demands in order to pave the way for a Triple Entente. Although the overarching Russian strategy was conceived as 'balancing' the imperial rivalries of Britain and Germany, numerous factors - not least Benckendorff's energetic pro-British stance - upset the scales and resulted in a stand-off with the Central Powers.

Demonstrating how Benckendorff's fear of losing Britain's friendship made him oppose all Russia's efforts at improving Russo-German relations, this book underlines the pro-Entente policy’s role in setting Russia on the road to war. For when the Sarajevo crisis struck; there was now no hope of appealing to German goodwill to help defuse the situation. Instead Russia's status within the Entente depended on a show of determination and strength, which lead inexorably to a disaster of the Great War.

About the Author

Dave Taylor has been in the computer industry since 1980. He was a contributor to BSD 4.4 UNIX, and his software is included in all major UNIX distributions. He is an award-winning public speaker and has written thousands of magazine and newspaper articles. He is the author of 20 books, including Learning UNIX for Mac OS X (O'Reilly), Solaris for Dummies (Hungry Minds), and Teach Yourself UNIX in 24 Hours (SAMS). A popular columnist for Linux Journal magazine, he also maintains a customer tech support website at askdavetaylor.com.

Brandon Perry started writing C# applications with the advent of the open source .NET implementation called Mono. In his free time, he enjoys writing modules for the Metasploit framework, parsing binary files, and fuzzing things.

101 Useful, or Imaginative Applications of the BASH language are given, ranging from automatically backing up your files and applications to Google Drive (and other cloud services), to Image and Photo Manipulation, to finding Prime Numbers. Like other Maker Scrapbook books, it gives trully interesting, useful and exciting applications of the technology, and tells how they can be easily hacked/modified to your tastes. While there is a gradual pace from the simplest projects, to the most complex and sophisticated this is different than the typical approach to learning BASH or another programming language. The power of the language and other Linux tools are well illustrated, as are some hints on how these applications (the book's shell scripts) can be modified to meet differing needs Some readers without a basic knowledge of the widely available BASH shell may wish to have another, more conventional, programming tutorial at hand to learn basic variables, control structures, etc.

The availability of BASH on OS X and Windows 10 is documented, however more information on differences and actual use are given for OS X due to the extreme recency of Canonical/Microsoft's BASH/Ubuntu Shell on Windows.

I recommend this book for both those IT people who write and run shell scripts daily, and you developer types who only occasionally require the use of shell scripts to perform some computer workflow. This "Wicked Cool Shell Scripts” book is especially beneficial for those, like me as a developer, who only need occasional use of shell scripts. Like me, are you tired of looking for shell script “how to” help online via “man pages” only to find out what you want to know is not there? For years, I’ve struggled with getting shell scripts to perform something I desperately needed to perform many times giving up. Now this book is beside my development workstation where I can quickly find out how to make a shell script perform some work for me. I am finding that I am making more beneficial use of shell scripts because this book is there for convenient and rapid pop up of “how to” script details. For you IT professionals who think you know everything you need for the use and application of shell scripts, I’ll bet this book can teach you some new scripting trips you were now aware of. The book authors, Dave Taylor and Brandon Perry, make available downloadable copies of all the shell scripts discussed in this book. Unfortunately for Scarlett, not everyone who survived the plague is looking for companionship. And she’s about to find out just how difficult survival really is.

This city would be great, if it weren't for all the people.

Through the eyes of a California teenager, we watch the collapse of the world into silence. The plague is fast and thorough, leaving Scarlett virtually alone in Los Angeles. The early part of the book does a great job of capturing her confusion and isolation, first as the plague picks off her friends and family one by one, then as the eerie calm settles upon a depopulated metropolis.

It's hard to explain the plot further without giving away major spoilers. All I will say is, she starts meeting other survivors, and things get a whole lot worse.

I really enjoyed Levesque's previous book, _Strictly Analog_. This book is very different, certainly more reminiscent of dystopian YA than William Gibson. I'm not a particular fan of YA, and _The Girl_ does rely on a couple of tropes that I think plague the genre. The main character, while likable, is portrayed as surprisingly competent and resilient (unrealistic, but practically necessary for this sort of story). Scarlett's thoughts also seem very advanced for her age, almost as though she were in her mid-twenties. Here Levesque sacrifices a little bit of plausibility for a lot of interestingness, which I guess is a good trade.*

_The Girl at the End of the World_ is good dystopian, with a dark, gritty feel and people pushed to the brink (and beyond) by fear and hardship. The collapse is depicted with the inevitability and violence of rolling storm, leaving silence and death in its wake. You get a real sense of Scarlett's terror: the lonely nights, the fear that nobody is out there, the fear that somebody is out there. She lives in terror of the known and unknown dangers that lurk outside her door, and that fear is made worse by the fact that there's not much to do to keep her mind off her worries.

It's hard to discuss the rest of the book without giving away major spoilers. But it kept me hooked right up to the end. The book is well written, with interesting, complex characters. The book may be a little harsh for YA's intended audience. Or I might just be overprotective, in which case I think teenagers might really enjoy it.

[*] Actually, there's a bit of a spoiler-alerty reason for the apparent maturity of the narrator, but I'd rather not get into it.

Post Apocalypse Done Right.

This is an extremely well written story about the survivors of a deadly plague. It is written from the perspective of a fifteen year old girl and the author has an ear for what sounds true. The slowly developing catastrophe is sufficiently creepy and the brutality of it's toll is shared with a heavy heart but the right degree of hopeful spirit. I enjoyed the set up in the first act immensely, the mix of media panic, family fear and blunt reality about how the world might be when depopulated .

There are some very nice touches that will saddened you but also make you see how well realized this story is. Once the twists start, the plot becomes a little less surprising. It is very serviceable and does keep you interested in the outcome. I'll be recommending this to my daughter who is a fan of these types of stories. Take a few hours and enjoy this brief novel that begins with the best written set-up of a apocalyptic scenario I've read in a long time.

Highly recommended!

Funny how you find things sometimes. Someone on a writers' discussion board posted a link to Immerse Or Die. I began looking at some of the blogger's reviews and found this one promising enough that I went to Amazon to look at it. I began reading, and by the end of Chapter 2 I knew I had to buy it. This is rare for me; I often look at a few pages of a book and move on, but I knew I couldn't stand to leave this one unfinished.

This may be the most seamlessly written novel I've ever read. Not a single question was left unanswered; continuity and logic were perfect in every detail I encountered. It's put together like a Rolex.

I've heard it said that it's impossible to find a publication without some error in it somewhere, but this book comes as close as it gets: I only found ONE mechanical error (spelling, punctuation, grammar) in the *whole thing,* the word 'me' appeared when 'my' should have. That alone makes this book shine next to the many sloppy publications I've seen lately.

The only negative criticism I could offer about this book would be that some of the later middle passages are a little slow. These are mostly introspective scenes dealing with the narrator's experiences and feelings. They weren't annoying, though; they kept me involved with the character and her plight, and these slower passages maintained a variation in pace.

Plot, characterization, dialog, and setting were all excellent.

Top-shelf stuff here.

Excellent for review of your questions for Part one MRCPCH. However you also should use your normal pediatic textbook before or along with this book as it does not give much details.
