About the Author
Constance Hammond is an INSERM director of research at the Mediterranean Institute of Neurobiology. A renowned Parkinson's disease investigator, in 2012 she became a Chevalier of the L�gion d'Honneur in recognition for her services to scientific communication. Studying biology at the University of Pierre and Marie Curie and the Ecole Normale Sup�rieure in Paris she completed her thesis in neurosciences at the Marey Institute in Paris, directed by Prof. D. Albe-Fessard. Guided by her curiosity and her constant desire to learn, she changed lab and research domains several times. With the knowledge of other systems and the mastering of other techniques she finally came back to her first and preferred subject of research; the role of the subthalamic nucleus in the basal ganglia system in health and Parkinson's disease.
After many years of lecturing neurobiology to biology and psychology students it became apparent that students were in need of a book to help understand the basic principles of cell electrophysiology. Discussions with Philippe Ascher convinced her that the best way to approach the subject was to explain ionic currents and potential changes in terms of single channels and unitary currents, describing pioneering neurobiological experiments. This first book "Neurobiologie Cellulaire" (written in French with her colleague Dani�le Tritsch) appeared in 1990. Its immediate success inspired her to completely revise the book content and publish it in English giving it to a larger audience; Appearing in 1996 the fist edition of "Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience" was born.

Excellent Book for Electrophysiology Students

I completely disagree with the other reviewer and found this to be the best introductory text for student starting in electrophysiology. Other textbooks I find are either too vague and oversimplify matters, even when they are supposed to be for graduate level studies. Another issue with electrophysiology textbooks is the heavy mathematical/theoretical explanation of certain concepts that is far beyond the basics and is functionally useless for the new student. This textbook however, is for the neuroscience graduate student beginning in electrophysiology and gives extensive detailed explanations of various concepts and while it does expect a certain level of background (that is provided in undergraduate coursework), I have yet to find a better introductory, graduate-level explanation of electrophysiological concepts. I HIGHLY recommend this.

Short, Direct, Easy to Understand and Deeply Informative.

I have asked myself what makes this textbook different from other texts on this subject and could not come up with the reason. Then it occurred to me, it's their style of writing.
The problem with most science textbooks and science authors lie in their ability to communicate through writing.They use poorly composed sentences and grammar which makes it difficult to understand.This text was a huge deviation from that.For a complex field like Neurophysiology, the authors did a brilliant job in describing and explaining the concepts using a combination of historical stories, detailed description of experimental methods, well composed easy to read sentences and a meticulous attention to the rules of grammar.
Paragraphs were summarized and titled with Short and Direct Statement. This was a well written text in terms of grammar and sentence composition which makes it extremely easy to understand. They did not try to impress themselves with unnecessary jargon which most science authors do.
They say what the want to say in a detailed way using clear sentences. In fact, apart from using this as a textbook,I am also using it to learn sentence construction in my scientific writings.
Some people have berated this book as poorly organized and expert level information. It's a Neurophysiology text, NOT an introduction to Neuroscience. They gave more than enough background information in my opinion. So for anyone saying this contains expert level information, I will like to think he or she has no knowledge in the basic concepts of Neuroscience. It's not a novel.
In summary: Excellent command of details in a succinct manner. Highly recommend this anyone planning to explore the field of Neurophysiology who already has background knowledge of Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience.

Great Electrophysiology Text!

For any graduate student starting out in electrophysiology, this is the text to get! I used this book for my graduate neurophysiology class and as a primary study guide for my qualifying exams, along with "Ion channels of excitable membranes" by Hille (also very good). I must say this is the best introductory electrophysiology text available. The chapters cover all the necessary topics to give one a solid background in neurophysiology. Each chapter reads like a primary lit review and figures from the chapters are created using actual data from the original work whenever possible. I found reading this text fairly easy and straight forward. Since the chapters discuss original data and cite the original works within the figures, you get a sense of the history of the field in addition to learning the material. That being said, it does help if one has some background in neuroscience and a basic understanding of electricity and circuits, which is usually covered in an undergraduate physics course, because after all, "Neurophysiology" typically really means "Electrophysiology", so this is primarily an electrophysiology text. This is not a text to just pick up and start reading if one has never had an introductory neuroscience course, and not if you are expecting topics on more general cellular mechanisms such as metabolism or gene expression in neurons (and should not be included in a text of neurophysiology anyway). The primary target audience seems to be graduate students within the neurosciences since the selected topics in this book are not usually covered at this level of depth in undergraduate courses. There are a few typos here and there that will be obvious if you are really paying attention to what you read, and in no way should that discourage you from reading this book. In short, I found all chapters fairly helpful, some being better than others. Chapters 3 and 12 are sub-standard compared to the other chapters and chapter 12 should be completely re-written. All other chapters were clearly organized and explanations of material were straight forward. It may be that Chapter 3 and 12 were written or edited by someone else and is why it kind of doesn't fit in with the rest of the chapters as far as quality and flow of information goes. In fact, I'm quite certain chapter 12 was written by a guest author as it doesn't have the same flow or organization as the rest of the book, and the overwhelming majority of errors are in ch 12. That being said, this book is still really good. Any graduate student in neurophysiology should have two text on their book shelf: "Cellular and Molecular Neurophysiology" by Hammond, and "Ion Channels of Excitable Membranes" by Hille. I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 stars because of chapters 3 and 12. (In case the authors or editors are checking out these reviews...) Rewrite chapters 3 and 12 on the next edition and include more information on "leak channels" and this text would easily get 5 stars! It's also quite obvious Ch 12 was written independently of the rest of the book as it reads like a list of independent random bullet points rather than an organized story that fits in with the rest of the book. This should not however, deter one from reading this excellent text. I certainly recommend this text to all graduate students of neurophysiology.
